Yesterday, our country celebrated its 239th year. Our break away from tyranny. Our first steps as a newly formed nation. I wonder what some of those original Americans would say if they say the state of the nation now. Probably a few shaking heads. We’re the most powerful country in the world, they say. We’re the “richest” country in the world, they say. We’re the land of the free and the home of the brave, they say. Don’t get me wrong, I love this country. I fought in a war for this country. It’s just a shame how wrong things have gotten.
Today, the chaplain asked an interesting question. What happens when life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness goes against God’s word. Isn’t that just the root of our problem as a nation? Sounds so simple doesn’t it? If only everyone would follow God’s word we’d be squared away! However, we live in a broken world, with broken people, and as children of God we have the task of navigating this minefield. That’s a topic for another day.
Happy Birthday, America! We move forward, we take steps backwards, we get things wrong, we are divided, and we have a lot of work ahead of us.
